Nuno Felted Scarf Kit

“Nuno” is Japanese for fabric. “Nuno Felting” is the name given to a technique for making lightweight felts, developed by Polly Stirling and her assistant, Sachiko Kotaka.
Feltable fiber (in this kit it’s merino roving) is arranged on a base weave (such as silk chiffon, or crepe, or gauze). The work is then manipulated so that tiny hairs of the fiber poke through the spaces between the threads of the woven base, and all the layers are stuck together. The whole piece is then felted. The unspun fiber shrinks much more than the woven base, which takes on the puckered or ruched texture characteristic of the technique. A scarf is a good first project, but it is also possible to make fabric that can be sewn into complex garments.

Materials included in the kit are a silk chiffon scarf (11 x 60 inches before shrinking and puckering), an ounce of merino fiber, and a piece of silk “hanky”. These three are dyed in coordinated colorways. (“Hankies” are non-woven silk fiber, prepared in a traditional way for spinning, or dyeing.) You will also find instructions and some sparkly fiber.


SPRING

This kit comes in four colorways. The pictures at the left and beneath show examples, with the felted side up. The bottom pictures show the pre-dyed silk chiffon after the piece is felted, with its characteristic puckered texture.
Please remember that the components of these kits are hand-dyed, one at a time. No two are exactly alike. And beyond that, there is no upper limit to the number of ways you can position and layer the fibers provided.

Undyed scarves, merino and silk hankies are available. Also merino in solid colors and hand-dyed variegated merino. And hand-dyed Bamboo, which does not felt, but can be layered in like the Silk Hankies.
