THERMOMETER
Always helpful for dyeing, sometimes essential. Most “cold-water” dyes do their best at about 85°–90° F, wool dyeing can require a sustained simmer at 180°–190° F. Experienced dyers know the look and smell of these temperature ranges, but a thermometer is such a simple way to take the guesswork out. The dye/candle/candy thermometers we offer here clip to the side of a pot, clear of the work.
pH TEST PAPER
Essential to the control of dye-bath chemistry. A pH of 7 is neutral; from 7 down to 0 is increasingly acid; and from 7 up to 14 is increasingly alkaline. Our rolls are 7/16 inch wide, 15 feet long (enough for 200–800 tests), in a clear plastic dispenser, with stainless steel cutter, and a color chart. Remember to test dye-baths before you add dye or you’ll dye the test paper.
WATER HARDNESS TESTER
Looks a lot like pH test paper, but measures water hardness. Two rolls in one dispenser register from 0–20 and from 10–50 grains per gallon—calcium carbonate equivalent.
LO-BUFF INDICATOR SOLUTION
Regular pH test paper does not give good results— in plain water, there’s too little ionic activity to measure. But this pH indicator solution is designed for the job. Use one drop in 4 ml of sample. Color chart and 2 specimen tubes included.
