SPINNING: Indigo Hound Combs

VIKING COMBS Developed from a traditional design used by many ancient cultures, based mainly on a set of comb fragments found in Viking sites. They have long, thick (1/8 inch), pointed teeth, and must be handled responsibly. We have two kinds, with single and double rows of tines, curved near the tips. The wood part is maple, the tines are stainless steel. Both come in pairs, and with an instruction booklet. Picture shows single-row version.

ENGLISH COMBS In pairs, with straight tines, set in rows. They come 4, 5 and 6 pitch (pitch is the numbers of rows of teeth), and the 5-pitch also fine, with the teeth set very close together. One comb is used stationary, held in a base clamped to a table. The other, moving, comb is hand-held. Each set includes two combs (maple heads and handles), a base pad (hard yellow pine with maple uprights), two covers, a clamp, a diz, a doffer and a straightener (for fixing bent teeth without perforating your fingers). Teeth are stainless steel, very sharp. These must also be handled carefully.
